Happy Birthday, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr!

I read Happy Birthday, Martin Luther King Jr. by Jean Marzollo to my daughter's class today. January 15 is Martin Luther King Jr's birthday, so we couldn't have picked a better day to read this children's biography of this great historical figure. The illustrations are etchings and very detailed. The entire class was silent as a mouse when we read this, and they all gasped in shock when they learned Martin Luther King Jr. was "shot and killed" in 1968. A drawing of Dr. King's gravestone was shown at the end, and I suggested that if any of the children were to visit Atlanta, Georgia, they might be able to see it in person. They found it hard to believe, but the teacher reassured them it is true.
