Making holiday wreaths
We collected fit and pampas grass and made some holiday wreaths today. The pampas grass wreath looks like a lion's mane on iZ here!

Last night the frost blankets were on the raised beds that needed them.

Our first frost!
Last night it froze. This is a piece of ice from a small bucket of water on our deck. And we still haven't tuned our heater on!

Metal tags for cider bottles
I tried several variations of stamped metal tags for my bottles of cider. I settled on a simple tag using copper foil folded around cardstock. The foil was lightweight enough to press the metal letters without pounding a hammer (a plus when crafting while other people are trying to watch The Clone Wars on the other side of the room). My fingers are sore but I got enough tags made for my first batch of cider (~15 bottles). We did a taste test today between the first and second batches of cider: #1 is the winner with Cote des Blancs yeast (#2 used Pasteur Champagne yeast). #1 is --a week older. Both are still young and in their secondary fermenters for a couple more months. My wine book has a recipe for persimmon wine, and our tree is ripening soon. I'll probably try that next. (addiction? What addiction?) :)
Last night's thunderstorm: amazing!
California is normally lightening-free, but last night we had a
spectacular thunderstorm with all kinds of lightening and thunder and
torrential rain. At 5pm we went outside in a light rain (no biggie) to get the goats
from the pasture to the milking shed. By the time we had the goats
out, it started raining in buckets! With wind! And hail! We galloped
at full speed down the hill. No resistance from the goats who usually
stop and look every 10 steps. We were completely soaked when we got to
the milking shed. Back home after milking and putting the goats in
their cozy dry stall, we barely shut the door and put the filtered
milk into mason jars in the freezer when we heard the rumble of
thunder. Shortly after the carbon dioxide monitor squealed and the ups
power backups chirped as all the lights flicked off. Yay! Candles! It
was a cozy stormy evening.

Should I be worried?
When my son asks, "Mom, can we buy some sodium (metal) so we can throw it in the pool?" The result would be a fiery display. "Maybe for Christmas!" Sent from my iPhone

That's not a dog - it's a horse!
Duffy, the mastiff at the horse class, was often used to illustrate grooming practice because he is practically as big as a horse!
4H horse grooming 2/3
J&E had their second 4h horse grooming class today. They learned how to tie up & lead a horse, and hoof care. They also learned some show styles for manes, which they are practicing here (banding).

Beaded bottle labels
I'm practicing making beaded labels for wine bottles for when we bottle our cider. I think the wire wrapping with copper plate will work best.

Good morning turkeys
The turkeys were flocked outside my front door one morning this week. They're not that afraid of cars.

Bedtime routine
Reading finished, kids are put to bed. 10 minutes later, a knock at
the door. It's E."I'm scared of rand(spiders, volcanoes, earthquakes,
rats, ...)" T picks up the ukulele. "I'm coming." A minute later,
oooo-oooo-somewhere over the rainbow... Like clockwork!

Climbing trees and talking to turkeys
J's friend C and his family came to visit today. We went for a walk through the forest and played in the sand pit and climbed the trees if Mossy Grove. C brought a turkey decoy (can you see it?) and a turkey call device, and spent some time talking to the turkeys and getting them to talk back!

Zazzle van
Today's lunch arrived in a Zazzle van! In the distance are the salt flats near the Pacific Shores complex in Redwood City. Beautiful day for a picnic!
