For some reason, sewing through two layers of fur and one of velvet was brutal murder on my size 70 and 80 needles. I didn't have any ballpoints, which may have helped.

A morning with the wool picker

A wool picker looks like a medieval torture device (center). It is made from nails in wood, spaced about 1/2" apart, on the top and bottom of the picker. The style here is a box or bench picker. The angle of the nails causes the raw wool to pass through the picker in roughly one direction when sliding the top back and forth over the bottom, pulling apart the clumps and fluffing the wool.

The four wools on the left of the picker are unpicked (raw off animal). The corresponding piles on the right are what happens to the wool after a few minutes of back-and-forth through the picker. Not shown: a few grams of sand and debris that dropped down after picking.

The bags behind the table are the raw wools sold directly from two farmers.

Grey wool: Jacob's sheep
Top right white: unknown cross breed
Bottom left white: Wensleydale cross
Dark brown: alpaca

Spinning with store-bought yarn

I've been practicing spinning store-bought yarn with my hand-spun wool. This morning I combined a wool/acrylic mix (solid blue) with thick-and-thin handspun wool (the roving is shown, dyed blue/white). The result is a chunky yarn that looks slightly candy-striped. I started knitting a sample and I lime how it's turning out!

Pepsi Night on Santa Cruz Boardwalk - featuring Delorians and beach movie (Back to the Future)

They set up an inflatable movie screen and projected Back To The Future. 5 or 6 Delorians (the stainless steel gull-wing car used in B2F) were parked on the boardwalk. Huge crowds!

The octopus was given a puzzle box to try and solve to get at a piece of fish. Shark eggs look alien! This marine center is a small "real research" local gem.
